The suicide bomber who killed 16 people outside Kabal Police Station in Swat District on Aug. 2 has been identified as Ilyas, alias Hamza, a resident of Upper Dir District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 
He detonated an explosive vest outside the station's main gate as police personnel and local residents gathered nearby for a locally organized peace gathering. Seven police personnel and nine civilians were martyred in the blast, and the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) claimed responsibility in a statement issued afterward.
As per reports, Ilyas had been arrested in 2023 in connection with a terrorism case and placed on physical remand during the investigation, but was later acquitted by a court for lack of evidence. After his release, he traveled to Afghanistan before returning to Pakistan; authorities are now investigating his activities during that period, including contacts with the TTP.
His background has come to light amid escalating security concerns in Swat and neighboring Lower Dir, where security forces have faced a string of attacks in recent weeks. In July, three Elite Force personnel were martyred in a TTP ambush in Lower Dir while returning from a search operation, and terrorists struck the hujra of Mumtaz Ali Khan, a local Awami National Party leader and peace committee head, in Matta Tehsil (now Bar Swat).
The violence has persisted into August. On Aug. 6, a Frontier Corps soldier was martyred, and two others wounded when terrorists attacked FC personnel in the Maidan Sarbanda area of Lower Dir; in response, security forces killed two attackers, officials said.
The recent violence has renewed concerns about security in Swat, where the TTP once held control over parts of the valley before a 2009 military operation cleared the group out and restored state authority.
